Check 21 is a Federal Law, designed for Banks and Credit Unions that process checks electronically. A legal copy of the original check, also known as an IRD, is specially formatted so it can be processed. The substitute check has data from the original check, encoded in the MICR line. The original check is voided once the check is digitized.
